Worst Ever Newborn Advice (as picked by you!) - Geelong Newborn Photography

Recently I did a little poll on my Instagram stories to try and find out some of the worst newborn advice people get given when they are expecting their bub or have a newborn baby. Of course some people might find some of this advice helpful or comforting (nothing with parenting is ever black & white after all!) and I know for the most part, people giving this advice are often really well meaning!!

However newborn life is overwhelming & emotional enough, getting unsolicited advice that often goes against our own instincts as new parents often just makes things more stressful & harder on new parents! Anyway, that’s enough rambling from me - read on to see some of the worst advice as voted by you!

Worst Ever Newborn Advice

- You think newborns are hard ? Just wait until….

- Don’t hold the baby to sleep 🤦‍♀️

- Don’t carry them too much of you’ll spoil them

- Sleep when the baby sleeps (as if you don’t have a million things to do & that’s IF they sleep)

- Not to spoil them by holding them all the time 🙄

- Newborns are easy! Just enjoy every minute.

- Let them cry

- Just be grateful to have a healthy baby

- Babies just sleep all day! Big fat lie right there! My first had serious FOMO & barely slept

- Don’t ever wake the baby

- Enjoy your sleep now! Like you can enjoy sleep in your last trimester anyway!

- Being made to feel like my babies temperament is a reflection on me as a mum (which feels great when you have an unsettled, colicky baby who cries all the time)

- “they grow so fast, enjoy every minute” – I had PND and this made me feel so alone

- Being told my 12 week old baby was just breastfeeding “for comfort” and that I shouldn’t feed her so often

💫The social worker in me has to remind anyone struggling that you’re not alone 💓 So many of us have either been there or are going through it and there are people you can talk to for support – you’re NOT less of a mother if you ask for help or admit to finding this stage of life incredibly hard.
